Mangalore: Nilofar, a cyclone brewing in the Arabian Sea is unlikely to spare coastal and south interior Karnataka. Earlier, Karnataka was unaffected by the Cyclone Hudhud as it crossed into Andhra and Odisha.
It is intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm and moving north towards Gujarat and Pakistan, according to the Met Centre.
Coastal and south interior Karnataka will be most affected, with thundershowers expected in several districts here in the next two or three days, according to the Met bulletin. The cyclone along with the north-east monsoon, which became active in the State last week, will contribute to the rainfall, an official at the centre said.
According to the India Meteorological Department’s end-of-season report on the southwest monsoon, south interior Karnataka was the only meteorological zone in the country (of the total 36) to receive “excessive rainfall”.
The region received 795 mm in the four southwest monsoon months, which is 20 per cent more rainfall than the long period average. Over the last 24 hours, parts of Karwar received a whopping 120 mm rainfall, Koppal 110 mm and Uttara Kannada 100 mm.
