Udupi: Two persons were arrested on the charges of cattle trafficking by the Kaup police in a swift operation held on Wednesday April 2.

The police have seized ten buffaloes and a cow that were  being illegally transported in a Tata 909 vehicle to Talapady from Kota for sale. The police stopped the vehicle at Koppalangady.

The two persons arrested have been identified as 28-year-old Zainulla Abid, a resident of Puttur who was also the driver of the vehicle and 54-year-old A Mohammed, a resident Kasargod.

The operation was led by Kaup police under the guidance of inspector Rajendra Naik. Police are investigating whether the cattle were stolen or were being taken for slaughter after buying. It is learnt that the vehicle had two number plates of Puttur and Maharashtra registration.

According to  sources, the animals were being transported in a ruthless way due to lack of space and a buffalo died during transport due to suffocation. The vehicle was loaded with vegetables to avoid suspicion. When the vehicle was stopped by the police the accused tried to mislead the police by saying that they were transporting vegetables.

The animals were taken to Neelavara goshala. The arrested were produced in court and remanded to  judicial custody.
