Mangaluru: As many as 11 people were arrested by the city crime branch police along with the Mangaluru North police who busted an illegal IPL betting racket in the city.
According to the police, the accused arrested were betting on IPL matches using a website called Star Exchange.
During the joint operation carried out at a house near Mahamaya Temple on Car Street in Mangaluru based on a tip-off, the police seized Rs 15,000 in cash and cell phones. All of the arrested are locals.
Addressing the media, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Vikash Kumar said that this is the first major crackdown on cricket betting in the city since the IPL’s 13th season began and that the city police will adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal betting.
A case has been registered under the Karnataka Police Act in the Mangaluru North Police Station in this regard.
