Continuous heavy rain, Old well caves in

Udupi: A well involuntarily collapsed in the earth near Kalikamba Temple in Kaup Padu village creating anxiety among people of Monday July 21.

The well belonged to Usha R Bhat the owner of the house which she had rented to Ramesh Acharya and his wife.

According to them around 4 am a roaring noise was heard from the location of the  well. When they rushed outside, the well had caved in and its walls were collapsing. The pavement around the well and the pump shed also fell in.

It is learnt that the well fulfilled the  water requirements of the people living in its neighbourhood throughout the year, and it is estimated to have caused a loss of several lakhs of rupees considering the present cost of construction.

The area had received continual rains since the last three to four days, and the  excessive enrichment of the underground water table around the well could have loosened the soil that made the well cave in
