Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district Congress will set up a COVID support help desk and former MLC Ivan D’Souza will be in charge of this initiative along with former mayor Kavitha Sanil, who will be in charge of the office. This was announced by former state minister Ramanath Rai during a press meet at the party’s district office on Thursday, July 23.
“Daily necessities have become expensive. There is a need for a separate COVID hospital in the district. Nodal officers, who are in charge of COVID control should do their work responsibly. All these problems need immediate attention from the people’s representatives,” he stated.
District Congress Committee (DCC) president Harish Kumar said that this is not the time to fight or protest, but to be a responsible Opposition. “We have the moral responsibility to highlight the failures of the government. The government has failed in providing kits to the people affected by the coronavirus. People are struggling to pay the hospital bills and the suggestions made by the Opposition parties have been neglected by the district administration,” he alleged.
The district is second in the state, next only to Bengaluru, with respect to the rising number of COVID cases, he said.
Alleging that the government’s carelessness has led to a state of panic among the people, Kumar said, “The Congress party has reached out to the people more than the ruling party. There are eight officials in charge of handling the COVID situation in Bengaluru, but due to a lack of coordination between them, the people are suffering.”
Mangaluru MLA UT Khader, who was also present on the occasion, said that there are doubts that have been raised about the COVID reports and demanded that the government clarify the people’s doubts. “The district administration has to give information about the number of beds available in various medical colleges online,” he said.
He also accused the government of failing to give a decent funeral to the COVID victims.
Former MLAs Abayachandra Jain, Moideen Bava, former MLC Ivan D’Souza, and former mayors Kavitha Sanil and Sashidhar Hegde were also present.
