Cargo vessel capsizes mid sea; crew rescued

Mangalore: Five crew members on board a cargo vessel were lucky to escape unhurt after the vessel which was bound to Lakshadweep from the old Mangalore port capsized nearly 40 nautical miles off the Mangalore North coast on March 16, Sunday. The loss has been estimated at Rs 80 lakhs.

The crew members who  took to the help of a life boat, were later rescued by the crew of another boat.  The five member crew included Abdurrazak of Bengre, his son and three others.

The cargo vessel named MSV Venkamma was owned by Naveen Mendon of Bokkapatna.Loaded with cargo, it  had left the Mangalore North Dock on March 15, Saturday.

Sources said late night on Saturday, water entered the boat and it soon began to sink despite repeated efforts by the crew to pump out water. Finally, they jumped out in life boats and were  rescued by  ‘Guru Maruthi,’ a fishing boat from Mangalore. The crew of Guru Maruthi sensed danger   as they spotted the Venkamma crew members  waving a piece of cloth and had rushed to help.
