Mangaluru: Obscure data available among the medical fraternity suggests 50% of accident victims treated in hospitals declared brain dead. However due to lack of awareness on cadaveric donation huge vacuum has been created among demand and supply chain of organs.

Addressing the scribes Medical Director of A J Hospital and Research Center, Dr Prashanth Marla K expressed he had come to the press club to promote cadaveric donation with mixed feelings after a brain dead Jeevan Vijay Fernandes (24) donated his organs. According to available data 160 persons in 10, 00,000 suffer kidney failure. On the contrary, he said, only 3,500 kidney transplantations conducted each year.
This act as a critical indicator on mammoth gap existing between the supply and demand of organs. On the other hand people ending up with liver failure are also huge. Prashanth informed 20% among brain dead could facilitate survival of significant numbers. The A J hospital had charged nil for Jeevan’s treatment at the hospital and the recipients had bear surgery and travel expenses. “One cadaveric donor could give fresh lease of life to at around 50 people, but in our country liver, kidney, heart valve and corneal donation are the only commonly transplanted organs,” he averred.
Prabhakar opined lack of awareness on cadaveric donation had hugely affected supply and demand of organs. The press brief read whenever a brain dead patient willing for donation the same would be informed to the Zonal Coordination Committee (ZCC). The ZCC later would follow up the case to serve desires of donors and recipients of organs.
