Mangaluru: In a bizarre incident, a woman rushed to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru along with a variety of Viper snake that had bitten her on Thursday.

Arathi (33) from Kanapade village of Bantwal had come over to the hospital after the viper bit her.

She had been to the bathroom to heat water for bathing when she was attacked by the viper. After she realised that it could be a venomous snake, she searched for the predator in the bathroom and finally spotted it hiding under firewood.

The lady captured the snake, packed it in a plastic jar and then rushed to Bantwal Govt hospital by her family and neighbours. However, since there was no proper arrangement to treat snake bite and since there was confusion with regard to the species of the snake, she was sent to District Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.

Ramesh, Arathi’s neighbour, who helped Arathi’s family to rush her to hospital, said that since they could not ascertain the species of the snake, they managed to capture it and bring it to the hospital so that doctors could find out what type of snake it was.

He said that most of the people mess up the situation out of fear and anxiety.

Finally, when herpetologists were contacted, they confirmed that it is ‘Hump Nosed Pit Viper’, which is mainly found in rural pockets where agricultural activities are carried out. However, it has mild venom, which cannot kill a human being.

While bite from a young snake of this variety can be treated under local system of medication, an adult viper bite may need advanced medication.
