Mangaluru: The newly appointed Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha interacted with the media personnel at a meeting organised by the Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education, Mangaluru on Wednesday, September 26.

At the meet, after the gathering was welcomed by Rev Fr Nelson Dalmeida, Director of Sandesha, each of the media personnel was introduced and Ravi Posavanike of Times of India offered the Bishop a memento in the form of a sapling.

In his address to the gathering, the Bishop spoke about the “Bandutva” programme that he had organised for better harmony in society just a day prior to the meet. The programme was attended by various religious leaders, political and community leaders, administrators, intellectuals and heads of Institutions and media houses who discussed bringing about change in the society to promote humanity. “I was happy that many showed up for the programme to make a difference to the society. The programme was made possible by people with a vision. Now it is time for others to take this a step forward to greater heights,” he said praising and thanking the media for the coverage given to the programme.

“Media plays an important role in our lives. It connects us to the world and keeps us informed about news, history, entertainment, etc. There was a time when man knew nothing about the happenings in the world. His knowledge about the external world was limited to his backyard or the village. But as time progressed, new discoveries and inventions like the camera, satellite, microphone, etc. help keep man updated day by day and minute by minute. Now all we need to get information is just to turn on the television or search the internet,” said the Bishop.

Then, delving into the responsibility of the media, he said that the media should concentrate on highlighting goodness and refrain from spreading fake or false news. Quoting Sigmund Freud, the Bishop advised, “We should have an instinct for life and not instinct for death. We should apply this in media so that there will be peace and harmony in the society.”

“Be a change and bring a change in the community and make a difference,” said the Bishop and thanked them for the support he has received from them since he took office.
