Karkala: A gang of chain snatchers targeting lone women is said to be once again operative in Karkala taluk. The modus operandi of the gang is to move around in bikes and approach lone women on some pretext.
In a latest case, two unidentified youth approached one Leena D’Souza(71) of Belman Akarlu Darkasu on May 11 at around 11 am while she was standing on the roadside on the Padubidri-Karkala state highway and questioned her the way to a marriage venue. Within a fraction of a second, the pillion rider snatched the karimani chain from Leena’s neck and also a rope chain and fled the spot. It is said the Karimani weighed 20 gram and the other chain 10 grams. The value of the same is estimated at Rs. 75,000.
Just a few days ago, a duo which came by a bike had snatched the chain of a woman who was walking on the roadside at Karkala Gandhi Maidan Road.
Four years ago, a police team led by then inspector Pramod had arrested a duo on the charges of chain snatching. One of them was Swastik Poojari of Shirthady. The police could apprehend them after a senior advocate who was a witness to a failed chain snatching attempt on Karkala Danasale road wherein chain snatchers tried to target a teacher, had passed on the bike number to the police.
