Mangalore : Banks play a key role in the progress of the society and also help in transforming lives through financial aid and guidance at the right time, said Padmashree Dr Sudha N Murthy, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation.













Delivering the Foundation Day lecture of Karnataka Bank in the city on February 18, Tuesday, she said banks play an instrumental role in helping build lives for people who are in hardship. This will not only assist the economically weaker sections but also help banks to achieve their target, she opined.
Citing the reformation brought about in the lives of Devadasis in Raichur through the Infosys Foundation, by offering financial aid and guidance at the appropriate time, Dr Sudha Murthy said initially when the Foundation members visited the colony, they had to face insult. Today around 3000 Devadasis are leading a self-reliant life after they were encouraged to take up self-employment, she said.
Ananthakrishna, ex-officio Chairman of Karnataka Bank who presided over the function, said the bank has successfully stepped into its 91st year of existence and added the farsightedness of the founders, their effective leadership and urge to serve the society has helped the bank grow to greater heights. The talk by Dr Sudha N Murthy has further inspired us to achieve more, he said.
P. Jayaram Bhat, Managing Director of Karnataka Bank, welcomed the gathering. M.S. Mahabaleshwar Bhat, General Manager proposed the vote of thanks. The function was followed by a Carnatic music concert by Vidushi Bombay Jayashree. Several officials and staff of the bank participated in the programme.
