Bangalore-Mangalore bus falls into gorge near Thumbay

Bantwal: One person was killed and over 20 passengers were injured when a  Bangalore-Mangalore private bus fell into a 25 feet deep gorge at Thumbay on the NH 75 on August 15, Thursday morning. The mishap is learnt to have taken place when the driver lost control over the vehicle.


The deceased is identified as Shekhar Shetty (60) of Brahmavar. The injured have been admitted to  various hospitals including Tumbay Hospital, Wenlock and AJ Hospital.

Sources said the Sugama Bus which was on way to Mangalore was overloaded with goods which was one of the reasons for  the mishap. The bus which had departed from Bangalore at 9.30 pm   was involved in the accident at around 5.15 am while negotiating a curve at Thumbay.

Shekhar Shetty died while being taken to the hospital. The injured passengers include  Harish (32), Rekha (28), Shivaram Suratkal (27), Jyothi Shetty of Udupi , Shanthi (34), Devadas, Satish (27) of Sajipanadu and Raghavendra (31) of Mangalore.

Bantwal Rural police have registered a case.
