Mangaluru: The airlifted organs of Jeevan Vijay Fernandes (24), a resident of Belloor, Bantwal, who was declared brain dead after a road accident on April 10 at Adyar have been successfully transplanted to two patients in Bengaluru.

While the liver was transplanted to a recipient at BGS Hospital in Bengaluru, the heart valves were given to Narayana Hrudayalaya. The cornea has been preserved in eye bank of the hospital and the kidney has been sent to Bengaluru.
The organ harvest was jointly performed by the team from the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation and a team from the hospital which lasted for two hours on Monday.
For the first time, Mangaluru witnessed the harvesting of live organs, a green corridor, a special flight to Bengaluru. The traffic police and the pubic deserve a special mention for the support provided to this noble act on the part of Jeevan and his family.
Jeevan’s eldest sister Jennifer, who works with AJ Hospital, motivated the decision of the parents to take the decision to permit the organ harvesting. This decision has given a new lease of life to two persons in Bengaluru.
