Mangalore :  A student of the Navodaya Vidyalaya in Chikmagalur drowned in the sea at Panambur beach on April 7, Sunday. The mishap took place when  Akash Kadur (17) along with 34 of his classmates was making merry at the beach.

The students had arrived in Mangalore from Chikmagalur for the AEEE examinations and decided to have a break in the evening at the beach. However, their joy was short-lived.

Though the Beach Life Guards, on realizing that Akash was drowning, plunged into the water and brought him back, unfortunately Akash died while he was  being taken to the hospital.

Yatish Baikampady, CEO of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project said  this was the first time that the Beach Life Guards  could not save a drowning person since 2009.
