61-day fishing ban in coastal district from June 1 to July 31

Mangaluru/Udupi: The fish loves of the coastal district will have tough time as the government will introduce the annual fishing ban from June 1 to July 31.

The ban imposed with the aim of facilitating fish breeding during the monsoon season, will be in place in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts.

During the ban, mechanised boats of all kinds- outboard and onboard, beyond 10hp capacity will be prohibited from venturing into sea, while the conventional boats with 10 hp outboard engine will be allowed to go fishing.

A release stated that while the violators will be dealt under the provisions of Karnataka Coastal Fishing Act-1986, they are also at risk of losing their diesel subsidy for one year.

Usually, the ban period used to be observed for 45 days, but now the period has been extended to 61 days keeping in mind the interest of the fishermen.
