60 cases of drunk driving in three hours at Surathkal

Mangaluru: DUI – Driving under the influence, is common in Mangaluru, and is expected on festive days, despite the traffic rules that are supposed to prevent it. While they may be a danger to themselves, they put the lives of others on the road at risk, as they weave in and out of the traffic, sometimes at high speed.

Well, the police department has for once, decided to act tough against drivers who drink and drive, posing risks to other road users. The Suratkal traffic police who conducted an  operation at Haleangady on Wednesday July 15 night and registered 60 cases in three hours and collected fine of about Rs 12,000. They also apprehended those who did not fasten their seat belts.

Drivers were caught unaware.Breath analyzers were used and those who claimed to be sober, were quickly put to shame. The locals were happy with the police action and backed them to the hilt. Many of the offenders were truck drivers.

Police inspector, Manjunath, was seen leading this drive with support from police sub-inspectors, Gopalakrishna Bhat and Purushotham.
