Mangaluru: St Aloysius Pre-University College, Mangaluru, celebrated its 139th Annual Sports Day at the College grounds on Friday, November 16. More 4100 students and staff/teachers of the college, participated in the march-past while wearing T-shirts/polo shirts with the logo reading “Rise As One”.

MLC Ivan D’Souza was the chief guest of the programme. He inaugurated the event by releasing balloons into the sky, after which he hoisted the flag and received the salute from the marching groups.

In his address to the gathering, MLC Ivan said that in order for one to achieve great heights, they have to aim higher. He then expressed his happiness at being back at the college for the event, as he is an alumnus of the institution. Recalling his days at the college, he said, “I remember playing and running on these grounds. These are the grounds from where many went on to become great athletes who participate in the state, national and international level competitions. Our education system must recognise the importance of students being involved in sports.” He also added that it was more important to participate than win and that the only way to prove that one is a good sport is to lose. “It’s not the will to win that matters, but the will to prepare to win that matters,” he said.

Following this, the sports torch was lit and the students pledged an oath, led by the leaders of each marching group. The oath was administered by Student Secretary of Sports, Flavrisha Monteiro.

Rector of St Aloysius Institutions Fr Dionysius Vas SJ also spoke on the occasion.

Vice principal of the Department of Commerce/Arts, P Charlotte D’souza welcomed the gathering. The programme was compered by 1st PUC student Noorain Shaik and 2nd PUC student Joswin Pinto. Physical Director Naveen Kumar delivered the vote of thanks.

SAPUC Principal-Fr Melwyn Mendonca SJ, SAPUC Finance Officer Fr John Lang Bosco SJ, Murali Krishnan, and Vice Principal of the Department of Science were present.
