Sullia: While the district administration is facing issues with segregating waste, a farmer of the town has created ‘wealth out of waste’ by producing organic fertilizers.
Vinod Lasrado is the farmer who has found success in producing one.
While the town panchayat was spending lakhs of rupees on segregation of waste, Vinod has found a cost-effective, alternative, quality fertilizer of producing.
Vinod uses Aerobic Composting System through which the dry and wet wastes are segregated. The arecanut logs are used to spread the wind and humidity in a controlled manner. Around 100 litres of jaggery and waste decomposer mixture are used to sprinkle on the compost.
In order to avoid foul smell, houseflies and mosquitoes, EM-1 solution is sprayed. Over it, the dried leaves are spread.
Continuing this process on a daily basis, in a span of two months, best quality organic fertilizer is produced.
Vinod said, “If we mix cow dung in this process, the organic fertilizer can be produced within just 40 days.”
Around 1 tonne of waste is accumulated in the pit. The process of production is on since five months.
According to Vinod, with 1 tonne of waste, 6 quintals of organic fertilizer could be produced.
He said, “Including the cost of EM-1 solution, labour charge, I have spent Rs 1500 on a daily basis for this process. It is possible to sell a kilo of organic fertilizer for Rs 2. As sufficient amount of fertilizer is produced, it will be distributed to the farmers.”
Vinod has learnt the skill of producing organic fertilizer by watching videos on YouTube and Google. He has bought decomposer from Ghaziabad and EM-1 solution from Kerala.
He gave out a message, “If you follow a systematic process of segregating waste it can become wealth for farmers. With the machinery in place, more quality products beneficial for the farmers can be produced. This will also reduce the issue of waste segregation that the local administration is facing.”
