Karwar: The fishermen from the Coastal areas of the Taluk staged a massive protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office demanding a ban on fishing in the sea of the Uttara Kannada District using light. The fishermen, who came in a procession near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in the City, raised slogans against those who carry out such fishing and expressed their anger. Though the State and Central Governments have also banned unscientific fishing in view of the future of the fisheries sector, it has been of no use, they lamented. The Fisheries Department and Coast Guard Officials are not taking any action in this regard, he said.

Nagaraj Harikantra, a Fisherman Leader from Kumta, said that even if the local fishermen risking their lives handover the people undertaking fishing using light. Such fishermen are not loss but makes crores of rupees by undertaking such fishing. However, this will create a fish shortage in sea in the future, he observed and alleged that the authorities were not taking any action despite a Government order in this regard.

Though Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju Mogaveera and Officials of the Fisheries Department were present at the spot to receive the request, the fishermen did not submit the request and expressed their anger against the Officials for not taking action. They objected authorities for not taking action despite a ban on fishing using light.

Later, Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti came to the spot. He accepted the request of the fishermen and listened to their problems.
