Karwar: A woman allegedly conned and sent to Dubai by a travel agent, reportedly sent a Whatsapp message to Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner to rescue her and help her return home.

A woman named Poornima Rajendra Bandekar, mother of two daughters from Shirawada Madiwalawada in Karwar was running a beauty parlour. A travel agent from Mumbai named Sameer contacted Poornima and assured her of beautician job in Dubai and asked her to come to New Delhi on May 24.

In the message to DC, she said that along with her husband she went to Delhi where she was given necessary travel documents and job confirmation letters.

When she landed in Dubai she was made to toil as domestic help and forced to clean toilets. She tried to convince her present owner that she was being cheated by the agent, he did not heed her.

Poornima even tried to contact her travel agent, but he had switched off his mobile. Since she does not understand English, it has been very difficult for her to explain her problem to her employers abroad. Poornima has sent another video in which she complained that her present employer has demanded huge sum of money to relieve her of her duties. Unable to pay the hefty amount, she finally sought government help.

Responding to her complaint DC of Uttara Kannada SS Nakul said, the district administration has registered a complaint based on the statement given by the victim. He also said that he has contacted the residential commissioner in the foreign affairs department who in turn is in touch with Indian embassy officials to take suitable action.
