In a country where gender inequality has always been persisting with problems right from history, here is a small place in Uttara Kannada, that has been showing a good amount of progress. Bhatkal has a sex ratio of 1016, making it stand out as the beacon of hope in the district.
This is a big improvement from the ratio of 938 that it saw over a couple of years back in 2019.
Bhatkal saw the birth of 986 boys and 1002 girls right from the month of April all the way down to December last year. The previous year showed a similar scene with 1469 boys and 1471 girls from April 2022 to March 2023. This made for a sex ratio of 1001 in that year.
Surrounding districts have begun to follow suit, where Yellapurt shows a sex ratio of 1000, with 197 boys and girls born last year. Kumta saw 955 males and 952 females, bringing a sex ratio of 997. Bhatkal has brought the entire district’s ratio to 967, which is a big improvement in recent days.
And with that, we can say that campaigns to stop female foeticide and save the girl child have proved to have some positive effect on our society, which has begun to show in this day and age.
Uttara Kannada, has over the years, come out with various initiatives to encourage families to celebrate the birth of a girl child, initiatives that sure have borne fruit today. In addition to that, training workshops have made officials more vigilant in preventing female foeticide and observing the prenatal gender detection laws of the state.
