Bengaluru: In the spirit of Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, an all-women protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was organised at Mosque Road in Frazer Town, Bengaluru on Friday, January 24. Over 400 women participated in the sit-in protest which has been going on since Thursday, January 23 evening.

It can be recalled that protesters have similarly been sitting-in at Shaheen Bagh, Delhi since December 15. Organisers of the all-women’s protest in Bengaluru expressed that they too hope to emulate the peaceful demonstration being staged in Shaheen Bagh.

Speaking to TNM, advocate Maitreyi said, “There are hundreds of women who are taking over the street through the night against the efforts of those in power to divide and criminalise people in a discriminatory manner. It has clearly brought out the power of the people, the power of love and unity to destroy the hate that the Central Government is attempting to spread.”

Accusing the BJP of being a threat to the secular nature of India, protesters (including students and working professionals of different faiths) raised Kannada slogans throughout the night.

Meanwhile, several men also staged a protest across Mosque Road in solidarity with their female counterparts.
