Bengaluru: When few leaked images of Rs.2000 denomination notes were circulated on social media, everyone billed it off as a mere rumour. One of the arguments was that the Centre may not introduce such a high denomination note keeping in mind its fight against black money and corruption. But, on November 8, the Prime Minister shocked everyone with the demonetisation move and introduction of higher denomination note-Rs 2000.

Nearly two and half months later another set of images of new high and low denomination notes are out and if these leaked images are to be believed then the Centre will re-introduce Rs 1000 denomination notes with more security features.

According to the images, the central government is planning to introduce new set of notes of Rs.100, Rs.50 and Rs.20 also. Picture of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi has been used only in the Rs.1,000 denomination notes. Other denomination notes have pictures of Red fort and other heritage sites.

According to the sources, it is not clear whether the RBI is planning to introduce new high denomination notes. “Central government is pitching for digital and cash less economy. But in many places, especially in rural India, there are no takers for the government’s idea of cashless transactions,” explained an officer from a nationalised bank.

It is said that the new notes have been put on wait and will be released only after the five-state polls are over. The Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is nothing short of an acid test for the Union government as it is being observed as referendum to the demonitisation decision. If the BJP fails, these notes will enter the system as 2019 election is crucial for the NDA.
