Bengaluru: A social media post by a Congress MLA on the Muslim community allegedly led to violence in Bengaluru city on Tuesday, August 11 night.
Violence broke out in Pulakeshinagar of the city after angry protesters claimed that a Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy’s relative posted a derogatory image of Prophet Muhammad.
According to a report by the Bangalore Mirror, an angry mob of around 600 people assembled outside the MLA’s house and set the vehicles parked outside his house in Kaval Byrasandra on fire.
Reports also say that around 1,000 people gathered outside the KG Halli police station and demanded that the cops take action against the Congress leader’s relative, P Naveen for his derogatory post.
After being detained by the police for questioning, Naveen claimed innocence saying that his account was hacked.
The police, according to a Times Now report, stated that the police intervened in the matter and no one from MLA Murthy’s family was hurt.
BM reports that it all started after the post was uploaded to social media, a group of people went to the police station to file a complaint against Naveen, however, they were allegedly asked to talk the matter over with the other. Irked by this, a mob soon gathered outside the police station and they started protesting against the police, demanding that action be taken against the erring party.
At around the same time, people also gathered outside the MLA’s house and allegedly set the vehicles on fire. Fire and emergency personnel rushed to the spot, however, they were allegedly not allowed to go through.
According to an official, the mob vandalised their vehicle and it had to be parked in the RT Nagar police station. They added that the mob burned two cars, five bikes and an autorickshaw.
New Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant and other senior officials visited the spot.
According to some media channels, the violence in the area is ongoing.
