Bengaluru: Houses in the villages under Magadi gram Panchayat have developed cracks due to the uncontrolled blasting at stone crushers. As per a report given in the Deccan Herald daily, residents claim that they are unable to sleep and that this has been going on for months.
The report also explains that the villagers have complained on how the blasting from unauthorised quarries have affected the water table in the region. The water level in many borewell have either gone dry or dipped considerably.
Even though the villagers have tried to create road blocks to prevent unauthorised quarrying and transportation of Jelly and M-Sand, it was of no use in the end. Even the roads are in a bad condition because of the overloaded tippers and tractors.
The Magadi lake which is lies about 4 to 5 Kms away from the quarry, is home to many migratory birds and the birdwatchers feel that they might stop coming to the lake.
Tahasildar Yellappa Gonnennavar had told Deccan Herald that there is no unauthorised stone crushers in Shirahatti taluk. He also explained that the quarry owners have been asked to produce their renewed license and that action will be taken against the quarries that are functioning in an unauthorised way.
