Bengaluru: The incident where Dalits were beaten up for removing the hide of dead cows has been viewed from a different perspective in Karnataka. The incident at Una will not have any impact in the State.

Those involved in professions like making footwear, musical instruments and other items related with cow hide came into focus after the incident. Very few families in Karnataka continue with the ancient profession.

Since the entry of readymade footwear, many people in Belagavi, Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts who were into the business have quit, according to B Gopal, a dalit politician. Poet Siddalingaiah doesn’t support killing cows, but is against those who attack the ones removing hide of dead animals.

Many in the State have quit the profession of removing hide from dead animals and moved on either taking up new jobs or higher studies. Only a few of them are still continued as the tradition of making them was passed on generation after generation.

According to many, the incident at Una will have little or no impact in the State as the business related to cow hides has almost disappeared here.
