Bengaluru: Even though manual scavenging is totally banned in the state, the death of people inside drainage pits are often reported. In one such incident, that has been reported from the heart of the city, two persons died inside a toilet pit.
As per reports, the incident occurred under the Commercial Street police station limits. The deceased have been identified as Muniyappa (50), a resident of Sarjapur and Sidddappa (18), a resident of Siraguppa of the Ballari district.
According to sources, the incident occurred on January 25, after the two descended into the toilet pit of a religious place for cleaning. Siddappa died on the spot while Muniyappa became seriously ill and died soon after.
Muniyappa, it is learnt, belongs to the SC community. Based on the complaint lodged by social activist T Narasimha Murthy, an FIR has been registered at the Commercial Street police station.
