Tumakuru: Tumakuru University, which is yet to get its own campus due to the controversies surrounding the land allotted for it, is in news again. This time round for getting the government nod for the use of its old emblem.
According to the sources in the university, the university was started in the year 2004 after getting bifurcated from the Bangalore University. History scholar Prof. O Anantharamaiah was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university under whose tenure the university got its emblem.
However in the year 2012, when Prof. SC Sharma was the University VC, university got a new emblem. Locals, especially rationalists opposed this new emblem citing several reasons including imposition of Sanskrit. But the then BJP-led government didn’t oblige their protests and VC had last laugh.
But once Congress government came to power in the state in the year 2013, locals again launched a movement seeking cancellation of new emblem and reintroduction of the old one. After nearly four years struggle, state higher education department agreed to scrap the new emblem and use the old emblem.
