Bengaluru: The South Zone Motor Transporters’ Welfare Association has opposed the hike in premium of third-party insurance for commercial vehicles, scrapping of 15-year-old vehicles, and collection of toll.
The association has appealed to both the Union and the State governments to redress their grievances before March 25 or else it has threatened to go on an indefinite strike from March 30.
G R Shanmugappa, general secretary of the association said that from April 1, premium of third-party insurance for commercial vehicles would be increased by 50 per cent.
He alleged that Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority had unilaterally decided to increase the premium in order to favour insurance companies.
He said there were over 24 lakh vehicles in the country that were at least 15 years old. If these vehicles were scrapped, lakhs of families, which are depending on these vehicles for livelihood, would put to hardship.
