Bengaluru: The ongoing truckers’ strike is likely to affect the supply of essential commodities such as fuel, vegetables and even transportation for employees of companies in the coming days as a meeting between the truckers and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) on Monday failed.

The strike, which began six days ago in the southern States, is set to intensify as several transport sector operators from across the country will be joining in, bringing operations to a complete halt. “The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has decided to join the strike from April 8,” said G.R. Shanmugappa, general secretary, South India Motor Transport Association.

At a meeting held in Hyderabad on Monday afternoon, IRDAI reportedly refused to back down from its final offer of a 40% hike on third party insurance premiums, a cutback of 10% from the previously proposed 50% hike. However, this was insufficient, associations said. “We will continue the strike till the time the Union government issues an order annulling the proposed hike in insurance rates. Till this time, there will be no supply of milk, vegetables, fuel and other products,” Shanmugappa said in a statement.
