Bengaluru: With 6 lakh new vehicles registering in the last one year, the total numbers of vehicles in the city has crossed the 80 lakh mark. This data has been shared by V P Ikkeri, commissioner, state transport department.
Speaking to reporters in the city on Monday, April 1, he stated that last year, the vehicle population in the city was 74.06 lakhs. This number has now crossed 80 lakhs.
He warned that if the trend is not checked, the total number of vehicles is expected to touch the 1 crore mark in the next three years.
“We can’t stop the registration of new vehicles. All we can do is incentivise the electric vehicles,” he said.
“The BMTC has just 6,000 buses. It is less than 1% of the total number of vehicles. We need to find a solution for the mass transport related challenges,” he said.
He also informed that the total number of vehicles in the state has touched the 2.10 crore mark. This means that there is one vehicle for every three persons.
