Bengaluru: The drivers attached with various State government departments will go on strike on June 2, demanding the implementation of seventh pay commission recommendations.

More than 1.40 lakh drivers will go on strike called by the State Government Employees’ Union.

The call for strike comes as another hot boiler to the State government along with the onslaught of mass leave agitation announced by constabulary personnel of police department on June 4. The strike of the drivers would mean to depend on private drivers for officials to commute.

In a statement released by MN Venugopal, president, State Government Drivers’ Association said that the association has requested private vehicle outsourcing agencies not to outsource vehicles to the government officials on June 2.

Any orders from the State government will be turned down politely, the statement read.

The association also claimed that the drivers working in State government departments are poorly paid compared to the drivers of neighbouring State governments.

The difference of payment between drivers of other State governments and Karnataka is as huge as Rs 8,000, said G Mani, vice president, State Government Drivers’ Association.

The association is also urging the government to meet the long-pending demands like regularisation of services of drivers working on contract basis since 2000 and filling up vacancies, he added.
