Bengaluru: In an tragic event , were a 11-year-old student lost a leg and was battling for life after a KSRTC bus rammed her while she was attempting to cross the road.
Lakshmi N was returning to her home in Tuppadamadu village, Nagamangala on Saturday after dance practice for an Independence Day event in her school when the incident occurred.
Lakshmi, a Std V student of Nobel School in Nagamangala, and her nine-year brother Ayush had taken an auto back home from school on Saturday afternoon. She had just got down from the auto near her home and was preparing to cross the road to her house when the bus knocked her down.
The impact of the accident was so great , that the little girl was dragged for about 150 metres. She lost consciousness and was taken to several hospitals, before eventually being admitted to Hosmat Hospital on Sunday evening. One leg has been amputated and doctors at the hospital say they are doing all they can to save the other.
“Lakshmi finished her practice in the school at around 1.00 pm and took an auto back home,” Manju C, a business development manager and a relative of Lakshmi said. “She got down from the auto and was trying to cross the road when the speeding KSRTC bus mowed her down.”
The girls parents were in a state of shock. On Monday, they sat beside her bed in the ICU, hoping she would wake up. Her father Nagesh works in the Social Welfare Department. Ayush, who witnessed the entire incident, is also in shock. He has not spoken a word since the incident.
“She wanted to grow up and become a dancer,” another relative, who was at the hospital, said. “She got down from the auto at the bus stop in the village. There is a school located right next to the bus stop. Buses and vehicles are supposed to slow down at that spot, but this bus came along at full speed.”
Doctors at Hosmat Hospital reveal that Lakshmis legs were crushed and blood vessels and soft tissues badly damaged. “We had to amputate her left leg at the level of the knee joint,” hospital authorities said. “She is on the ventilator right now. Even the lower portion of her right leg is badly damaged. We are trying our best to save it.”
The bus driver, who fled the spot, was later arrested and the bus seized by Nagamangala police. KSRTC managing director, N Manjunath Prasad, said, “We are aware of the incident. The driver has been arrested and we will take departmental action against him. As far as the girl is concerned, the entire cost of treatment will be borne by KSRTC. We have a separate forum called the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal that will also provide additional assistance to the girl.”
