Spousal violence, a bitter truth for many women in Karnataka

Bengaluru: The National Family Health Survey, (NFHS 4 conducted in 2015-16) on the Women’s Empowerment and Gender Based Violence (age 15-49 years) has revealed few disturbing facts about how women folk are ill-treated in our state.

According to the report, even though mobile has been made compulsory to avail all the social security schemes, only 47.1% of women in the state have mobile that they themselves own/use. According to the report, this number is just 34% among the rural women while 62.3% among their urban counterparts.

According to the data, only 59.4% of women in the state having a bank or savings account that they themselves use. It is 52.1% in Rural Karnataka and 67.8 % in Urban Karnataka.

According to the report, 20.5% women in the state still experience spousal violence. This was 20% ten years ago. Spousal violence is more in urban areas with 20.6% while 20.4% in rural areas. What makes this data more disturbing is 6.5% of them have faced violence at the time of pregnancy.

Child mal-nutrition: According to the report 36.2% children under 5 years are stunted (height-for-age). This is more in rural areas (38.5%) compare to in Urban Karnataka (32.6%). Adding to the woes, as per the report, 26.1% children under 5 years are wasted (weight-for-height). As per the report 10.5% kids are severely wasted.

Another major finding of the report is that only 62.2% kids in the age group of 12-23 months fully immunized. It is 59.8% in Urban Karnataka and 64.8% in rural Karnataka.
