Bengaluru: The state government has decided to write to Supreme court with regard to banning Kambala, the traditional sport of Dakshina Kannada. According to the law minister, the Central government had bypassed the state government and written to the DC of Dakshina Kannada directly in this regard.
While speaking at a peoples representative meeting held at Vidhana Soudha, law minister T B Jayachandra said that the state government will take up the issue with the Supreme Court. It will also hold discussion with Central law minister Sadananda Gowda and National animal welfare organisations.

Kambala, is a traditional sport, dating back several centuries. It is not held for business purpose. The local people are emotionally connected to this sport, he said.
“The buffaloes used for the sport are taken care like our own children. There will not be violence during the race”, he averred.
Ministers Vinaykumar Sorake, Abhayachandra Jain, Ramanath Rai and Law and animal husbandry department officers were present at the meeting.
Earlier the supreme court had ordered a ban on Tulunadu’s traditional buffalo race, and the Animal welfare board called a halt to this sport.
