Bengaluru: The Karnataka Safai Karmachari Commission gave one week’s time to Bangalore University to bring parity of pay among sweepers and cleaners within the campus. During a visit to the BU campus, the Karnataka Safai Karmachari Commission found numerous lapses in the treatment of sanitary workers.

According to M.R. Venkatesh, Chairperson of the Commission, the 1,100-acre campus needs over 250 sanitary workers, but just 96 are on the rolls.

“These workers are exploited and were not given salaries on time. They were given just Rs. 4,500 per month in cash. There is no documentation at all as to how much money the workers should be getting. They have been cheated over the years,” he said. The university has been given a week’s time to respond and take corrective measures.
