Bengaluru: Terming IPS officer Roopa’s stance on declining Namma Bengaluru Award as ‘dramatics’, the Namma Bengaluru Foundation, on Tuesday, said that the supercop was never offered the award and hence the question of her refusing it does not arise.

Roopa, who shot to fame after exposing the preferential treatment being given to jailed AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala at the Bengaluru Central Jail had said that her conscience did not permit her to accept the award as it came with a ‘monetary’ component.

In a letter written to the foundation, which was later released in the media, Roopa said, “I did not accept the Namma Bengaluru Award by the Namma Bengaluru Foundation on Sunday as it came with a heavy cash reward of Rs 2 lakh.”

Further, she said that as a government servant, she was expected to maintain neutrality and distance from “quasi-political” bodies.

On the contrary, the Namma Bengaluru Foundation claimed that the views put forth by the officer came only after the jury selected the winner for the award, and not when her name was nominated for it, thus making obvious her disappointment for not getting the award. They also accused Roopa of lobbying when her name was nominated for the Namma Bengaluru Awards.

“Her views have surfaced only after the jury had decided the final winner,” the statement said, dismissing her public stand as ‘dramatics’ that make her disappointment at not getting the award ‘obvious’, said a statement released by the Namma Bengaluru Foundation.

Founded in 2009 by Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Foundation has been working on various citizen issues in the city, giving out annual awards for citizens and government officials for their work. The ninth edition of the awards were given out on Sunday.
