Bengaluru: Minister for Bengaluru Development K.J. George on Monday directed the officials of D Devaraj Urs Truck Terminals Limited to prepare a comprehensive plan for the development of the truck terminal at Yesvantpur in Bengaluru north-west suburb.
Minister George, accompanied by Bengaluru Mayor G. Padmavathi, Commissioner N. Manjunatha Prasad, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood and lawmaker of Rajarajeswari Nagar Munirathna, had a meeting with D Devaraj Urs Truck Terminals Limited chairman V.A. Suri and Managing Director C. Mallikarjuna.
“The developmental works will be taken up after receiving the comprehensive plan from the authorities. A decision will be taken on whether the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) or D Deveraj Urs Truck Terminals Limited will take up the developmental works,’’ George said.
Elaborating on the discussions during the hour-long meeting with the officials, the minister said the issues such as development of roads in the truck terminal, construction of footpaths, ensuring parking lots for trucks and housing for the employees of Devaraj Urs Truck Terminal Limited.
He said the conservancy workers have been clearing garbage once in a week till now. “The authorities will ensure clearing of garbage on a daily basis,’’ he said.
“The truckers mainly complained about lack of basic amenities and poor infrastructure. The BBMP has already been working on how to improve infrastructure here. I hope these problems to be fixed in two months,’’ BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said.
The truckers complain to the minister about heaps of garbage, choked and damaged underground drainage pipes and defunct street lights. “The major issue we are facing is garbage and debris being dumped in the terminal area. Truckers are finding it difficult to use the pothole-ridden road that connects to the terminal,’’ said D Devaraj Urs Trucks Terminal Limited Managing Director C Mallikarjunaiah.
The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association president B Channa Reddy also complained about the theft incidents happening on regular intervals. “We have been requesting the police authorities to depute some policemen to keep a vigil on thieves but in vain,’’ Channa Reddy said.
Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood has agreed to depute four policemen to patrol the area from tonight.
According to Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ Association president G.R. Shanmugappa, there are around 700 street lights in the vicinity but all are defunct.
