Bengaluru: The cold war between the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) has been ongoing ever since their alliance came into force in mid-2018, just after the 2018 Assembly election results were announced, wherein the BJP emerged as the single largest party.
Ever since the alliance was formed, each day one or the other leader in the coalition has been opposing the alliance, especially after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where the Congress and JDS saw a disastrous result. This friction between the two parties finally came to a head when several Congress and JD(S) MLAs resigned from their posts, resulting in the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in the state.
Now, it is being reported that several members of both parties want to discontinue the alliance.
Speaking to the media, on Wednesday, July 31, former prime minister and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda said, “Our party leaders and workers are of the opinion that the alliance should not continue. As the local body elections are days away, they have decided not to contest with the Congress party.”
“The state has observed the coalition administration in the state. The same cannot be expected in the local bodies. Everyone in the party has come to the common consensus that they do not want the alliance and are expecting the high command to take the final call,” he added.
Meanwhile, he said that a decision about the party’s disqualified MLAs, who were recently expelled, will be taken after the Supreme Court gives its ruling on them.
