Bengaluru: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao on Wednesday launched a website, ‘E-Mapan’, to enable the public to file complaints against shop and petrol bunk owners, who charge above MRP. The minister said with this launch the department would become paperless.
The Department of Legal Metrology has decided to take stringent action against retail shops selling products at prices higher than the maximum retail price (MRP) in commercial complexes, malls and bus and railway stations in Bengaluru and other towns.

The department conducted 1.37 lakh inspections during 2014–15 and booked 31,400 cases against errant shop owners. It collected compounding fee of Rs. 6.78 crore. The department also collected verification fee of Rs 17.82 crore, he said.
To mandatorily mention carat and weight of gold and silver articles in bills issued to customers by jewellery shops, it has proposed to amend the Karnataka Legal Metrology Enforcement Bill, 2011, the minister said. Since the subject falls under the concurrent list, the draft of the Bill has been sent to the Centre for consent, Mr. Rao said.
