Bengaluru: After the opposition parties declared overnight strike in the Assembly hall on Wednesday, the legislators of BJP and JD(S) watched television, sang bhajans and had dinner together on Wednesday night.

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy was not a part of the protest as he left to Mysuru to resume his son’s film shooting.

The overnight protest in both the Houses of the legislature was all about demanding the resignation of Bengaluru Development Minister K J George on DySP Ganapathi suicide case. Bed sheets, blankets, pillows and dinner were provided by Secretariats of the Assembly and Council for the overnight stay. The MLC’s were requested to have dinner which had chapati, rice dishes and gravy, at a room adjoining the Council hall.

Arrangements like medical facilities, mobile network jammers being switched of and media banned from entering the lobby were all done by the secretariat.

While the women legislators were allowed by their respective parties to go home, the ones taking part in protest watched TV and sang bhajans.

The overnight stay at the assembly hall by legislators is nothing new in Karnataka assembly. The opposition had spent a whole night on March 17, 2015 seeking a CBI probe into the death of IAS officer D K Ravi. The then president of KJP B S Yeddyurappa had staged an overnight protest in November 2013 demanding the extension of ‘Shaadi Baghya’ scheme to all communities. Similarly, opposition parties had staged overnight protest on July 12, 2010 over the illegal mining issue.
