New Delhi/Bengaluru: A senior official of the central government made it clear that except Jammu and Kashmir, no other state in India could have its own flag.

According to the official, there is no provision of a state flag in the Indian Constitution. If the Union government gives recognition to the flag designed for Karnataka, other states and districts may also start demanding similar recognition. It would create the Constitutional crisis, reported the PTI.

Meanwhile, he said that state of Jammu and Kashmir has a separate flag as it has special recognition. Also, according to the flag code, India has only the tri-coloured National Flag. So, there is no recognition for other flags except Jammu and Kashmir according to the Constitution, said the official, who didn’t want his name to be quoted.

Ray of hope

However, the spokesperson of the Home Ministry said that they didn’t receive any proposal from Karnataka to give any statements. Still, he said that India maintained single flag culture. If any state wants a flag they cannot use it on the occasion of Independence Day, Republic Day except the tricolour. The state flag can be used as a symbol of emotions of people on the occasion of the state’s foundation day, he maintained.
