Bengaluru: Live virtual classes for students of kindergarten, upper kindergarten and primary classes (Class 1 to 5) have been banned by the Karnataka Government. As per the announcement made by Education Minister Suresh Kumar during a press meet on Wednesday, June 10, pre-recorded classes can be continued for these Classes.

The government has also halted the collection of fees for online teaching of these classes with immediate effect.

According to a report by TNM, some schools have been holding online classes for students of lower grades and even for Classes 4 to 7. While online classes have been banned for students of kindergarten, upper kindergarten and primary classes (Class 1 to 5) with immediate effect, these classes will continue for students of secondary classes.

A committee will also be formed to discuss how to engage students and the modalities to conduct online and pre-recorded classes.

Reportedly, many parents across the state had complained about the online classes and on June 2, a meeting was held with experts in the education field, psychiatrists and others to discuss the same.

Speaking to the media, the Minister announced that the screen time for certain classes and what is appropriate will be discussed at a later date. “We have taken this decision for LKG, UKG and primary classes for now by taking into consideration their age and mental well-being,” he said.

All across the nation, many have criticised the practice of online classes, not only because not all families have access to laptops or a computer or even proper internet facilities, but also because the move was made without proper norms.
