Bengaluru: Elections to the posts of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled to be held at 11.30 am on September 28 at Kempe Gowda Hall, BBMP Head Office.
Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi has announced the schedule of election to the posts of Mayor and the Deputy Mayor. It may be recalled that the elections were supposed to be held on September 19 but postponed to September 28 due to confusion over the voting rights of certain members especially Congress MLCs S Ravi and M D Lakshminarayana. With this the number of voters increased to 269 as against 267 of last year’s elections.
While the Congress has 112 voters (76 corporators, 28 MLAs and MLCs and 8 MPs), the BJP has 125 voters (100 corporators, 19 MLAs and MLCs and 6 MPs). The JD(S) has 23 voters (14 corporators, eight MLAs and MLCs and one MP). Congress candidate Manjunatha Reddy was elected for the Mayor’s post even though Congress had only 76 corporators. The Congress had a tie-up with JD(S) to get the required majority to get its candidate elected to the Mayor’s post. The Congress supported JD(S) candidate Hemalatha Gopalaiah for the Deputy Mayor’s post.
KPCC chief to hold talks with JD(S) leader
Dr G Parameshwara, president, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has said that he would discuss about the BBMP elections with JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy at an appropriate time. “I am waiting for Kumaraswamy to allocate time for the meeting to discuss about sharing power in the BBMP. Congress always prefers to join hands with secular forces,’’ Parameshwara said.
When asked whether Congress would support JD(S) for the BBMP Mayor’s post, the KPCC president said that all political parties want their candidates get elected to the Mayor’s post. “It will be decided during the discussions with Kumaraswamy,’’ he said.
