Bengaluru: It is learnt that Universities outside the state and now possibly COMED-K are refusing to accept the provisional marks statement issued by the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) as a valid document causing hardship and heartburn among students.

puboardBeing a Karnataka based organization the the the students seeking admission under the COMED-K quota are being accommodated in the ongoing engineering seat counselling, the ComedK officials said they could not do the same with medical admission which will begin from mid-July.

The Department of Pre-University Education has not yet begun issuing the original marks cards for students who have cleared second PUC this year and it would take another two or three weeks at least, it is learnt but universities across the country have already started admissions for undergraduate courses.

Disclaimer problem

The problem has cropped up owing to the disclaimer printed at the bottom of the provisional marks statement downloaded from the Internet.

The disclaimer states, “Neither NIC nor Department Of Pre University Education, Karnataka, is responsible for any inadvertent error that may have crept in the results being published on NET. The results published on net are for immediate information to the examinees. These cannot be treated as original mark sheets. Original mark sheets have been issued by the Board separately.”

Since it mentions that the original marks statement has already been issued, some colleges outside the State have a problem with students submitting the provisional marks sheet. Moreover, the disclaimer also speaks of lack of accountability for the provisional marks, from the department’s end.

Interestingly the ComedK officials too are raising objection to this. The competition for medical courses is stiffer and students from several other states are able to produce original marks cards. Other students would raise objections if exception were to be made only for Karnataka students, the ComedK officials said.

It has been a tricky situation for parents and students. Bikash Dey, father of a candidate who has applied for admissions in Delhi University, explained, “The disclaimer is the primary problem. Also, most other states have issued original marks cards except for Kerala and Karnataka.”

‘Cover letter from DPUE’

Meanwhile, students need not panic as the DPUE would issue a cover letter authenticating the provisional marks card as the valid document, Godbole said.

“There is nothing called a standard format for issuing the marks statement across the country. The university ought to accept a document issued by Karnataka government. We too make admissions for students outside Karnataka taking their provisional marks statements until the originals are issued to them by their respective boards,” she said.

While the department has no practice of issuing original marks cards before the revaluation process is complete (it got over recently), as of now, they would issue a letter to any student, who is facing trouble, with the provisional marks statement.

“We will give a letter authenticating and stating that the provisional marks statement is a valid document issued by the State government. Students can approach the PU Board for this,” Godbole added.
