Bengaluru: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, on Friday, December 20, informed the media that his visit to Mangaluru was cancelled.
“My 2 PM flight to Mangaluru was cancelled,” he said adding that his rights were being crushed.
“As Leader of the Opposition (Legislative Assembly), my visit to Mangaluru is justifiable,” Siddaramaiah said.
He then informed that he would be taking a normal flight to the city on Saturday, December 21.
It can be recalled that Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders were scheduled to visit Mangaluru following violent protests that broke out in the city on Thursday. They intended to assess the situation in the city and visit the family members of the two civilians who died during police firing during the protests.
While the other Congress leaders including M B Patil, S R Patil, Zameer Ahmed Khan, V S Ugrappa, C M Ibrahim and former Assembly speaker Ramesh Kumar landed arrived at the Mangaluru International Airport in the afternoon, they were prevented from entering the city. They were detained by the police and were later sent back to Bengaluru.
Prohibitory orders and a curfew still prevail in the city. Mobile and some broadband internet services have been suspended for a period of 48 hours in Mangaluru city and the Dakshina Kannada district.
