Bengaluru: Progress achieved in digitization is meager 2% in India due to lack of skilled personnel, opined former chief minister and Congress member of Parliament M Veerappa Moily.

Inaugurating the centre for skill development at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of technology (NMIT),Moily said, future progress in the field depends on the skill development.

Villagers around NMIT will benefit initially from the new centre, which will train people in computers, plumbing, vehicle maintenance and other areas of importance.

“America which had huge percentage of youth two centuries ago capitalized on the situation to build a strong and powerful nation and India with highest number of youth presence should benefit from the situation likewise,” said Moily.

He called for united efforts to face challenges of the future and achieve rapid progress to become global leader and lauded the efforts of NMIT in establishing a exclusive centre for skill development.

Speaking on the occasion, former vice chancellor of defense university Dr. M L Patnaik said, efforts in research and seminars associated with research will lose meaning if skilled personnel fail to keep pace with developments in the digital world.

Presiding over the function, Central University Chancellor Dr. N R Shetty cited the example of Denmark which made tremendous progress in the field of skill development by opening folk schools. Continuing he said, “Denmark with an areas equivalent to 2-3 districts of Karnataka managed to reach top position in skill development, not by opening universities but through folk schools. The country is able to offer solutions to the developing world and churning skilled personnel on a regular basis through folk schools.  The state can reach such heights only if it awakes to the situation to take up challenges to make people self reliant by imparting skill development”

Dr. N R Shetty dealt on efforts made by NMIT to ignite passion among youth and rural community in skill development. Principal of NMIT Dr. H C Nagaraj welcomed the gathering and lecturer Dr. Kiran Aithal proposed the vote of thanks in the end of the end.
