Bengaluru: Higher Education Minister Dr. C. N. Ashwath Narayan has appealed to guest lecturers to end their protest, as the government has considered their demands.
On Friday January 14, the State Government proposed relief measures for lecturers, including a 100 per cent rise in honoraria.
Lecturers’ salaries will rise to a minimum of Rs. 26,000 and a maximum of Rs. 32,000 per month. Previously, lecturers who met the UGC’s qualifying requirements were paid Rs. 13,000, while those who did not were paid Rs. 11,000 each.
Despite the raise, lecturers continued to protest on Saturday January 15, when the government doubled their workload from 8 to 15 hours. Several lecturers’ associations have expressed that they will continue to protest since they are dissatisfied with the proposed policies.
“The government has announced a good package, irrespective of the burden on the exchequer. Instead of semesters, appointments would be made for the full academic year, and honoraria will be paid by the 10th of each month,” Narayan added. He asked the professors to consider the student community’s interests as well.
