Lashkar man caught with arms convicted for plotting terror attacks in B’luru

Bengaluru: A Jammu and Kashmir-based terrorist was convicted by a city civil and sessions court on Tuesday after finding him guilty of plotting terror activities to attack locations of importance in Bengaluru.

The terrorist has been identified as Imran Jalal (42). He is said to be an active member of banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). The police recovered two AK-47 rifles, 200 live bullets, 10 hand grenades and a Thuraya satellite phone from Jalal after he was apprehended by them on January 5, 2007, while he was on his way from Hampi to Bengaluru to execute his plot. Five other accused, who were part of the conspiracy hatched between 2001 and 2007 in places, including Islamabad, J&K, Mumbai and Hampi, are still absconding.

It is gathered that Jalal, a JKLF member, had been to Pakistan illegally and undergone arms training at Jangal Mangal in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. According to sources, He disassociated himself from JKLF and came to Bengaluru and studied in Acharya Polytechnic Institute at Peenya till 1994. He went back to Srinagar avfter he failed in the final year of his Polytechnic.

After a visit to Islamabad in Pakistan in 1995-96, he returned to Karnataka where he set up a Kashmiri artifacts shop at Hampi. Under the instructions from LeT leader Lakhvi he plotted attacks on HAL Airport, Vidhana Soudha and IT establishments such as Wipro, Infosys and ITPL in Bengaluru.

Judge Kotrayya M Hiremath, 56th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, who convicted Jalal, will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Wednesday.
