Bengaluru: Police always portray themselves to be strict and stern, and it is justified because their duty demands them to be so. Even women in khaki are no different, but in a particular situation, a mother’s instinct took over a lady constable who could not put up with the cries of a newborn.

Last Saturday, the police control room phone buzzed and a Good Samaritan passed on the message- A newborn baby boy has been abandoned near an under construction building of Celebrity Layout, Doddathogoor on outskirts of Bengaluru city.

The baby was first spotted by a kind-hearted ragpicker who took the crying child and wandered in the vicinity seeking help till he found a Good Samaritan to contact the control room. Within no time the Hoysala patrolling vehicle rushed to the spot and took the child away. In the vehicle were ASI Nagesh and constable Archana.

The Constable grabbed the plastic wrapped fragile baby whose umbilical cord was still hanging. She put the crying baby on her lap and the vehicle darted to the nearest hospital and then to Electronic City police station.

At the police station, the constable showed the humane face of the Khaki as she rushed into a room and breastfed the newborn. Within three minutes, the newborn stopped crying and as Archana brought the infant out, he beamed a smile. The people at the police station said that newborns beam such a smile only when God descends to talk to them!

Archana could not ignore the baby’s cry because she herself has a four-month-old child and she had returned to duty only a week ago after completing her maternity leave.

A jubilant atmosphere took over the grim police station. The ASI even rushed to the local garment store to purchase a cute dress for the baby.

Naming ceremony

In the station, a lot of time was spent wondering what the name of the baby boy should be. When someone suggested ‘Kumaraswamy’, everyone agreed. The logic was that the baby was going to be in the care of the government and hence naming the child after the Chief Minister of the state would be the best. Now, Kumaraswamy, however, lives in Shishu Mandir, Wilson Garden without any special status accorded to him.
